One of the questions we hear most on maintenance calls: “How long do garage door springs last?” The honest answer is: it depends — but there’s a formula for estimating where your springs are in their lifespan, and there are clear warning signs to watch for before they fail.
Springs are rated in cycles, not years
The first thing to understand is that spring life is measured in cycles, not calendar years. One cycle = one complete open + one complete close. Most standard residential springs are rated for 10,000 cycles.
The calendar math depends entirely on how often you use your garage:

A household with two working adults who both use the garage for commuting will go through standard springs in 4–6 years. A vacation home with one car may get 15+ years.
High-cycle springs: the upgrade worth knowing about
Standard springs at 10,000 cycles are the baseline, but they’re not the only option. High-cycle springs are available in:
- 25,000-cycle — the most common upgrade, roughly 2.5× the lifespan
- 50,000-cycle — heavy-duty option for very high-use doors
- 100,000-cycle — commercial-grade, rarely needed in residential applications
High-cycle springs cost more up front than standard springs, but for a household that uses the garage 6+ times per day, the upgrade can make sense because it reduces the chance of another service call sooner than expected.

- Any household with two or more regular drivers
- Doors used as the primary entry point to the home
- Commercial or home-based business applications
- Anyone who can’t afford an unexpected spring failure
How to estimate your spring’s remaining life
Step 1: Figure out when the springs were last replaced. If you bought your home and don’t know the history, you can sometimes find the date on a sticker applied by the installer. If there’s no record, assume springs that look corroded or have visibly uneven coil spacing are approaching or past end-of-life.
Step 2: Estimate your daily cycle count. Count a typical weekday — each time the door opens OR closes is half a cycle. Two adults leaving in the morning and returning at night = 4 cycles/day.
Step 3: Do the math. 10,000 cycles ÷ daily cycles = days until end of standard spring life. Subtract how many days have passed since the last replacement.
Example: A household with 6 cycles/day had their springs replaced 4 years ago. That’s 4 × 365 × 6 = 8,760 cycles used against a 10,000-cycle spring. They’re at ~88% of rated life and should be planning for replacement.
Physical signs of spring aging
Beyond the math, watch for these:
Visible rust or corrosion. Some surface rust is normal, but significant corrosion — especially on the coil wire surface — indicates degraded material strength.
Uneven coil spacing. On a new spring, coil spacing is uniform. As a spring fatigues, you may see slightly irregular spacing in certain sections.
Increased door weight. Do the balance test monthly: disconnect the opener, lift to waist height, and release. If the door drops more than it used to, spring tension is declining.
Opener running harder. Your opener’s motor sound changes as it works against a weakening spring. A strained or slower-moving door is a reliable signal.
Visible gap. Once you see a gap in the coil, the spring has already broken. This is past the warning stage.
The case for proactive replacement
The timing of spring replacement matters more than most people realize. If you replace springs proactively — when you planned it, on a weekday morning, with a scheduled appointment — the quote is clearer because the door can be inspected before it fails.
If the spring snaps at 7 AM on a Monday when you need to leave for work, you’re looking at a same-day emergency call. The repair cost is similar, but you lose control of timing and potentially lose use of your car for a few hours.
If the spring snaps while the opener is running, and the opener runs repeatedly against the full weight of the unsprung door before you realize what happened, you may also need opener repair or replacement.
The math strongly favors monitoring your spring’s life and scheduling replacement before failure.
When to schedule a spring inspection
