What counts as a garage door emergency?
A garage door stuck open overnight — or stopped in an unsafe, partially raised position — is a genuine emergency. An open garage exposes your home, vehicles, and belongings to theft, and leaves the interior open to rain, snow, and wind. The longer it stays open, the higher the risk.
A snapped torsion or extension spring is the most common emergency we respond to. Springs hold the entire weight of the door under extreme tension; once one fails, the door becomes dangerous to operate and can slam down without warning. This is never a DIY repair — a spring under load can cause serious injury.
Snapped or frayed lifting cables and off-track doors are equally urgent. When a cable breaks or the door jumps its tracks, the door is no longer properly supported and can fall. Forcing it by hand risks worsening the damage or causing injury.
If your door is stuck, making loud grinding or snapping sounds, or won't fully close and latch, call us. We'd rather you call and find out it's a minor fix than leave a door unsecured overnight.

Common questions about emergency garage door repair
How fast can you arrive for an emergency?
For most NYC-area and Long Island emergencies, we aim to arrive within 2–4 hours of your call. Timing depends on current dispatch queue and your location, but we'll give you a realistic ETA when you call — not a 6-hour window.
Is there an emergency surcharge?
No. GarageGuard uses flat-rate pricing that doesn't change based on time of day. You'll get a quote for the specific repair before we start, and that's what you pay — nights and weekends included.
Can I use the door while waiting for you?
If your door is stuck open, do not try to manually force it closed — this can worsen cable or track damage or cause injury. If the door is stuck shut and the opener is disconnected, you can usually use the emergency release cord to manually lift it partway, but call us first and we'll walk you through it safely.
What areas do you serve for emergency calls?
We cover all five NYC boroughs, Nassau County, Suffolk County, and parts of Westchester. If you're unsure whether we reach your address, just call — (516) 287-1459 — and we'll tell you immediately.
