We’re big fans of homeowners doing their own maintenance. Lubricating springs, tightening loose bolts, cleaning sensors, adjusting the close limit on the opener — these are all reasonable DIY tasks that save money and keep your door in good shape.
But there’s a clear line between maintenance and repair. Cross that line with the wrong garage door component, and you’re in genuine danger. These are the six things we see homeowners attempt that they absolutely should not.
1. Torsion spring winding or replacement
This is the most dangerous DIY attempt in residential garage door repair, full stop.
A torsion spring stores an enormous amount of mechanical energy. A standard spring on a 16×7 two-car door is wound to 7–10 turns, holding 100+ ft-lbs of torque. When that releases uncontrolled — as it can if the winding bars slip, if the spring breaks mid-winding, or if the spring is held incorrectly — the spring can strike with enough force to break bones or cause severe lacerations.
The tools required for safe spring winding (proper 1/2” solid steel winding bars, a torque chart for your specific spring wire diameter and door weight) are not the tools a homeowner typically owns. Substituting a screwdriver for a winding bar is how people get badly hurt.
The specific risk: Winding bars slipping out of the winding cone under tension. This happens when homeowners use undersized or improvised tools, or when the cone set screws aren’t fully tightened before the bar is moved.

2. Extension spring replacement without safety cables
Extension springs run along the side tracks and are contained differently from torsion springs. They’re under less tension than torsion springs, which is why some homeowners feel comfortable working on them.
The danger is what happens when an extension spring breaks during or after repair: if there’s no safety cable running through the center of the spring (a steel cable that keeps the spring from becoming a projectile), the spring can snap off the track and fly across the garage at high speed.
Many older homes still have extension springs installed without safety cables — which is itself a hazard. If you have extension springs without safety cables, that’s worth having corrected even if nothing else is wrong.
If you’re replacing extension springs: use proper techniques, install or verify safety cables through the spring body, and release all tension before disconnecting anything. Better: call a tech.
3. Bottom bracket and cable work
The bottom bracket is the L-shaped bracket bolted to the bottom corner of the garage door. The lift cable attaches to it, which connects to the spring system. This bracket is under constant tension from the spring — even when the door is closed.
Homeowners sometimes try to replace bottom brackets, reattach cables, or adjust the cable attachment at this point. The problem is that doing so while the spring is wound means any slip releases the spring tension through the cable in an uncontrolled way.
Safe bottom bracket work requires relieving the spring tension first — which is back to torsion spring work territory. This is why cable replacement and bottom bracket work are always professional repairs.
4. Adjusting spring tension (adding or removing turns)
You’ve done the balance test and the door drops when released — meaning the spring needs more tension. How hard can it be to add a turn?
Very risky. Adding or removing turns from a wound torsion spring requires the exact same tools and procedure as a full spring replacement. The spring is fully loaded when you’re making the adjustment, and slipping a winding bar with a loaded spring is the most common way spring-related injuries happen.
Additionally, getting the tension right requires knowing the exact door weight (which requires a fish scale measurement with the door disconnected) and matching the turns to the correct tension table for your spring’s wire diameter. Guessing doesn’t work safely.
5. Track realignment when the door is under spring tension
If a track is severely bent or if multiple rollers have come off the track, some homeowners try to force the door back onto the track or bend the track straight themselves. Doing this while the spring system is wound — which it always is unless you’ve specifically relieved the tension — means you’re working against active stored energy.
A door that pops off the track while you’re working on it under spring tension can drop suddenly and violently. A 200+ lb door dropping unexpectedly is a serious injury risk.
Safe off-track repair involves relieving spring tension, carefully re-seating rollers using track spreading tools, and then re-winding the spring properly. None of these steps should be skipped.
6. Replacing or rewiring the safety sensor system
Sensor wiring seems harmless — it’s just low-voltage wire, right? The wiring itself isn’t dangerous. But improperly wired sensors are.
The safety sensor system is the primary protection against the door closing on a person or animal. If sensors are wired backwards, if the beam isn’t at the correct height, or if the wiring creates a false “all clear” signal, the door’s auto-reverse function can be disabled.
A door that won’t auto-reverse can seriously injure a child, pet, or adult who is in the doorway when the door closes. The CPSC has logged hundreds of garage door-related injuries annually, and sensor failures are a significant contributor.
If you replace sensors, use the correct replacement for your opener model, mount them at the correct height (per the manufacturer spec, usually 4–6 inches from the floor), and always test the auto-reverse function with a 2×4 laid flat in the door’s path before relying on the system.
What’s actually fine to DIY
To be fair, many garage door tasks are safe and satisfying to do yourself:
- Lubrication — springs, rollers, hinges, bearing plates. Annual task.
- Tightening loose hardware — hinge bolts, track mounting screws, roller brackets.
- Sensor cleaning and alignment — wiping lenses, pointing sensors at each other.
- Close limit adjustment on the opener — per the owner’s manual.
- Remote reprogramming — follow the Learn button procedure.
- Weatherstripping replacement — side seals and top seals are easy replacements.
- Bottom door seal replacement — the rubber at the very bottom of the door is user-replaceable.
These are all low-risk, useful tasks. For the ones on the “never” list above, the professional repair cost is almost always reasonable — and it’s always cheaper than an emergency room visit.
